Nurturing Healthy Emotions in Kids: Tips for Parents

Create a Safe Space for Expression

Encourage your child to express their feelings by creating a safe, non-judgmental space. Let them know it's okay to feel sad, angry, happy, or scared. Help them identify their emotions with flashcards or by identifying emotions in movies or books. This may help them identify their own emotions! By acknowledging their emotions, you help them understand that all feelings are valid. Praise your child when they express their emotions healthily. Positive reinforcement helps them feel good about their efforts and encourages them to continue using these strategies.

Be a Role Model

Children learn by observing you experience your own emotions! Demonstrate healthy emotional habits by managing your own emotions effectively. Show them how to express feelings appropriately, whether it's taking deep breaths when you're frustrated or talking about your day when you're happy or sad! This can help them realize that emotions aren’t an emergency or something to fear! 

Teach Emotional Vocabulary

Help your child build a vocabulary for their feelings. Use words like "happy," "sad," "frustrated," and "excited" in everyday conversations. The more they can articulate their emotions, the better they can manage them themselves and express them to others! 

Create a Calm-Down Corner

Set up a calming space where your child can go to relax and regroup. This may even prove more of a calming influence than timeouts after meltdowns! Include soft items like pillows, stuffed animals, and a favorite Saranoni blanket. Encourage them to use this space when they need a break or feel overwhelmed. Introduce simple mindfulness exercises like deep breathing, counting to ten, or visualization. These techniques can help your child calm down and manage stress. Practice these together, making it a bonding activity.
