Fun Family Traditions to Encourage Giving and Generosity with Kids

Here at Saranoni, giving is an important part of our business (and family) culture. Lucky for us, the start of a new year is the perfect time to create and plan for meaningful family traditions that emphasize giving and generosity. These traditions not only make a lasting impact on your kids but also on the people you help along the way. Here are a few ideas to start a giving tradition in your family that brings joy and creates lasting memories.

1. Kindness Advent Calendar

Create a kindness advent calendar with simple, actionable tasks like donating clothes, leaving a thank-you note for a teacher, or baking cookies for a neighbor. Let your kids take the lead in choosing some activities—they’ll feel more invested in spreading a little cheer if it’s their idea!

2. Family Giving Jar

Set up a “Giving Jar” in a central spot in your home. Encourage everyone to contribute loose change, allowance, etc. At the end of the year, decide together where to donate the money—whether it’s buying gifts for kids in need or supporting a local food bank.

3. Handmade Gifts for Neighbors

Spend a cozy evening creating homemade cards or treats for your neighbors or community helpers like firefighters or librarians. This activity fosters creativity while teaching kids that even small gestures can brighten someone’s day.

4. Volunteer Together

Set aside time as a family to volunteer. Serve meals at a shelter, deliver comfort to elderly neighbors, or participate in a community clean-up. Seeing the direct impact of their efforts helps kids understand the importance of giving back.

5. Secret Family Santa

For December, flip the script on Secret Santa! Have each family member draw a name and spend the week performing secret acts of kindness for that person. This can be as simple as leaving a sweet note or helping with a chore. On Christmas morning, reveal the “Secret Santas” and share the fun moments from the week.

Wrapping it UP!

Creating traditions–while initially a little daunting,  not only teaches kids the value of generosity but also creates solid traditions that you’ll love looking back on. Do you have a favorite family-giving tradition? Share it with us in the comments or tag us on Instagram—we’d love to hear your ideas!
